Just bought a 1996 Mustang 3.8 from my neighbor. Car has 80,000 miles on it and is a one owner. Car has been setting up for a couple of years and was running hot when it was parked. I suspect a head gasket has blown, given the sordid history of that motor. Will having both heads worked solve the problem ( if that is the case) or should I look to replace the motor? Paid a grand for the car and it is in very good condition body-wise.

Are you sure that it would be the head gasket; I never figured that that would cause the engine to run hot. I'm not trying to show you as stupid, but was there enough coolant? Also, if it is something small, you're lucky, I paid 4,000 for my 98 V6 and it's in showroom condition (not bad for a 17 year-old). Hope your problem isn't too big, it'll take away from the fun and fuel economy of a V6!!

what leads you to believe its a head gasket? how deeply did you investigate to pin point your problem? Yes 3.8's have notoriously known for head problems, but what a lot of people over look are the water jackets located at the front of the head. is it leaking internally or pouring out of the block? i offer these questions only because at some point they have struck me. good luck and if other than a head gasket the car runs and drives good and is nice in a apperance, fic it and drive it eventually try and sell for more than purchase price. he he
