I recently bought a 79 pace car to restore. it ran but was not driveable, what rearend options did the pace car come with?, it looks like it has a 8.8 but there are extra mounting brackets on it that aren't in use so it could be from a later mustang or other ford, if they came with an 8.8 were they all equip with trac-lok? I have an 81 with a 7.5 trac-lok would it bolt up and be able to handle around 300 HP? Also the 4 spd stick is it able to handle around 300 hp or should i swap to a 5spd/6spd, plus is the T56 tranny a cable or hydraulic clutch?

The 8.8 didn't show up in late model Mustangs until 1986. Power handling capability of both the 7.5 rear axle and the 4-speed is questionable with your expected power gains. providing you don't get too much traction or powershift the car, you should be OK if the parts are in good working order. 8.8s are easy enough to find that it would be in your best interest to swap one in given your plans. Five speeds and the related equipment are easy neough to come by too.

79 pace cars came stock with a built up 7.5 rear. 8.8's werent really used in mustangs of those years unless you installed one yourself. The tranny should handle 300 hp. 5.0L engines (also 302)pushed around 260 horse so 300 shouldnt be a problem.

the 8.8 that is in your car is out of an 86 and up mustang gt with quad shock  4 speeds are fun but drivability is no that good with any gear less than 3.08 in the rearend  your 7.5 can hold up for a city car but if u plan on a lil 1/4 mile fun
it will fail after prolonged use at the track  the 8.8 was hit or miss on track lok
early was optional 94 and up standard
we will all have our day in court (tickets suck)
