are the 94-95 true cobra heads worth porting? i know everybody says get aluminum heads as for the weight savings put i can get the whole motor (only 65982 miles) for a real good price and with some of the add parts on the motor or in it(1.6 rr and an f cam) might i come out better buy having the iron heads ported as for dropping $1,000 to 1300 for new pair of the light weight aluminum heads? i plaining on building a n.a. 302 or 306 as a stroker is out of my range for right now? also is keeping the stock rods ok or should i up grade to Eagle light weights? any info would be great

A friend of mine put an intake and a set of heads from a '93 cobra that were extrude honed on his 347 and that car ran great. I like iron heads for street cars, they help out with the "sleeper" factor. I say buy the motor and get the heads and intake ported or extrude honed.

It all depends on your target RPM. Doing a port and polish job on heads tends to lend them to a "peaky" horsepower and torque curve. Which is fine if you are at that specific rpm range such as drag racing. But, on the street, A well balanced head that keeps port velocity high at low lift and volume at upper RPM's is key. The 93"cobra heads are GT-40 heads. I would say if you are going to go the extent of having the heads ported, you should have them flow benched. That way you can match a cam profile to match the heads. Keep in mind of future upgrades. The current heads will need bigger valves, ect.. a set of rebuilt iron heads with bigger valves, springs, porting, flow bench, ect... can cost in the neibhorhood of 800 to 1000 dollars easily and will not perform with a great set of aftermarket heads. It will not take many upgrades to geet choked down by a set of small heads. As usual it always matters about money and end goal. I think you would be money ahead to purchase a good set of heads that have much greater potential. The cobra heads will not flow enough for a stroker no matter which way you look at it. They will work but so much more can be had with a little better planning and prep.
