Welcome to the 5.0 World. They are great cars and you will have a lot of fun with it. This month's issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords has a Top 10 Budget Parts article. You can find the issue on the shelves at most popular retailers like Walmart, Barnes and Nobile, Borders, etc. I believe it hit newsstands this week, or maybe next week.

You can run a supercharger on a stock 5.0-liter engine without any problems! There are many different options available and each manufacturer has it setup to work great out of the box.
I suggest a few things before you switch to the blower. One is to get a better exhaust system. I had a 1990 LX and I put a blower on it with the stock exhaust. Once I stepped up to better stuff, it was like a totally different animal. Another, an MSD 6AL box is worth spending money on. The blowers usually come with something, but the 6AL is a great add-on to keep the charge strong under boost.
I suggest you get some gauges too, when money permits. Two specific gauges, Fuel Pressure and Boost. It is nice to see what is going on when under boost.

The standard kits from Paxton, ProCharger, and Vortech. They all make ones that produce about 8 psi max.
You need to know the condition of your engine. The last thing you want to do with an engine that has high mileage or on its way out, is to throw on a blower. Your money would be better spent on an engine rebuild. Many companies offer crate engines or short blocks. Or you can freshen up yours with new rings and bearings. Speed Pro makes a rebuild kit and I am sure Summit makes something for a basic rebuild.

475 is a tall order for a stock engine. I would expect to get a relatively stock engine to make around mid 300s with a bolt-on system. Adding better heads, camshaft, and upping the boost will net gains in the 450 or so range. But I would caution, the reliability rests in your engine. Stock short blocks have been known to go that high, but they don't last too long. That kind of power requires a basic rebuilt engine like offered from Coast High Performance, DSS, Bennett Racing, Panhandle Performance, Ford Racing, etc.
Don't forget when going to high or a horsepower rating, you have to up the fuel system, drivetrain, and chassis. Things can snowball, that is for sure.
The best advice is to have a plan on the performance you want, the budget to pay for it, and the means of getting it done.
