I have a 92 Ford Mustang 5.0 and when I change the oil and put 4.5 quarts of oil in it the dipstick is showing an inch over full. Is there enough oil in it or is the dipstick wrong?

Did you start the engine before you checked it? Did you drain both plugs? That engine runs on 5 qts, so it shouldn't be too full.

I did start the vehicle up after putting in 4 quarts and that put it up to the full mark. But the book does say that it is normal for it to go past the full mark but how far? It says as long as it doesnt go past the letter F on the dipstick. That still over a inch away on the dip stick.

I have had 3 GT's. If you don't drain the front plug where the pump sits, 4 qts will fill it up. Keep an eye on it, as long as it is not too full, or too low you will be fine. I think the book means it will go past until the pump circulates the oil, then it will level out. It all depends how much you took out. Talk to the previous owner.

I did drain both plugs and I also have heard that several other people with a car similar to mine have had the same problem. Im thinking that the reason the oil is showing overfull is because there is no oil in the front of the oil pan. I have owned this car for 7 years and every time I change the oil the same thing happens, and I only average driving this car about 500 miles a year.
