1986 GT Convertible - Exhaust Manifold / headers...

I have an 86' GT Convertible that I'm in the process of fixing up. It has been in my family since new, but I have never bothered to get clarification on this. I am looking at adding shorty tube headers, but looking down into the engine bay, it sure looks like it already has headers on it, which wouold have to have been from the factory, as the cars always been with us. Did '86 GT cars come with headers from the factory or a standard exhaust manifold? If it came with headers, I assume adding shorty tube headers wouldn't really make a huge difference in performance and would probably be a waste of money.

all mustangs from 85-93 came with factory "headers".  these are restrictive once you start adding horsepower.  if its just the sound you want just add an H or X pipe with a good catback kit like flowmaster or dynomax and that should put a smile on your face and also add a few ponies. if you get serious with the mods like heads cam intake etc you should look into a good set of shorty or full length headers.
