On June 20, 2009, the Savannah (GA) Mall is hosting the “Summer Heat” Car and Motorcycle Show for “Cops Against Illegal Racing (C.A.I.R.)”. C.A.I.R. is a non-profit corporation that was created by law enforcement to teach young drivers about the effects of illegal racing (street racing), aggressive/reckless driving and impairment. The program is designed to be a national campaign to prevent property damage, injury and fatality as the result of vehicle crashes. Sponsors for the event include Summit Racing Equipment, Georgia Army National Guard, Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, Roger Wood Foods, Triangle Ice, Snap Fitness, Press Works, and many others. The event will also consist of vendors such as Unique Tuning, SuperBike Specialties, and Low Country Customs. There will be food, music, door prizes, and raffle items available. There will also be a rock climbing wall. Entry fee for car and motorcycle participants is $20. There is no charge to the public. The event will be held outside of the Bass Pro Store at Savannah Mall, 14045 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31419. A select number of cars and motorcycles will also be on display within the mall. The event hours are 8am to 4pm. For more information, visit Cops CAIR. You may also call 912.308.2566.
Why was C.A.I.R. created? Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers. Each year, approximately 7,000 teenagers between the ages of 16-20 will die in a vehicle crash. Most of these crashes involve excessive speed. Approximately 250,000 teenagers who are involved in vehicle crashes will be injured to the extent that they require medical treatment. Additionally, it is estimated that vehicle crashes cost the U.S. economic system over 40 billion dollars annually. Based on these facts, C.A.I.R. was formed to make our public roadways safer.
How does the program work? C.A.I.R. introduces their program through 3 key components: Intervention, Cooperation and Education (I.C.E.). Intervention - Taking proactive measures to influence the lives of our youth by offering guidance and fellowship, Cooperation - Teamwork! Establishing relationships that will build strong foundations to support a united effort towards driver safety, and Education - Offering unique and memorable instruction that will utilize displays, demonstrations, interaction, feedback and awards to help retain our message as a lifelong goal.
Where is the program taught? Currently, members of C.A.I.R. offer their services at community events, car shows, race tracks, car club meetings, and any other event where they can speak with the public.
C.A.I.R. is also writing an extensive lesson plan for the program. The lesson plan will be offered to law enforcement agencies around the U.S. for implementation in their respective jurisdictions. When the lesson plan is completed, it will also be presented to high school administrators for approval to be taught within their system.
