I just bought a 1996 t-bird 4.6 LX and first thing to be done is the exhaust. Does this engine require any of the three cats? I wanna put total straight pipes on (loud pipes save lives) with 22" stainless tips that are 2.5 in 4" thoat. What should I expect for sound? Crappy? Maybe I should decrease pipe diameter to 2" because of the lack of back pressure??? Please respond, can't wait to freak people out with remote start and LOUD ford OHC exhaust. I love ford OHC v8 sound almost as much as my '66 390 with 3 1/4" pipe and burnt out glass packs. PEACE

Your computer uses the front two cats for engine managment. The last one (the one that is also a y-pipe) isnt monitored. As far as the straight pipes go, I have know idea what it would sound like but I was always told that the early 4.6 (i.e. yours) needs a certain amount of back pressure or youll burn up the valves. You might look at a site called supercoupeperformance.com. The guy that owns it really helped me on a lot of different questions and he sells a lot of aftermarket parts for the tbirds, including a full exhaust system. hope that helps.
