Hello,
My name is Joseph Kent I’m from Huntsville Alabama. I own a 2000 model mustang GT with a 4.6 SOHC completely stock. The engine has a “tick” (is the best way I can describe it ) at high RPM’s anything over 2500 it’s almost like a knock but not quite as loud. It doesn’t do it in idle only going down the road just before you change gear. Just cruising down the road in fourth or fifth gear you can’t hear it. Due to only being able to hear it going down the road, I can’t pinpoint where this tick is coming from, it’s pretty loud you can even hear it inside the car. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be? Does the 4.6’s have any kind of issue with valve springs breaking? Or could it possibly be something on the front of the engine timing chain etc? The car has not lost any power or oil pressure. It also doesn’t do it when the engine is cold, only after it heats up. It seems like when the engine reaches temp it starts to make this “tick”. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

I am having the same problem, from what I have found out is that the manifold bolts are known to go and I found out today that one of mine is broken. I am guessing that when the car starts to go under load, that the motor twists and the exhaust bolt knocks where it's broken. It's a simple thing, just check to see if you have any broken bolts.

it could be a decompressed valve or a bent connecting rod slightly bent because my 2000 gt sucked up a lil water and mine is ticking to

If you can't hear it siting still revving the engine then I wouldn't suspect any timing chain or valve issues. I do know for a fact that after changing my h-pipe I did have problems with exhaust manifold bolts that would keep working loose and the pipes would rattle (and leak around my collector gasket). One warning though I also have a 2000 GT that initially started out making a ticking noise under a light load(such as taking of from the drive through or shifting at mid throttle) but then it started getting worse and eventually got to the point where it ticked all the time above 2,500rpm..... turned out to be bad rod bearings, at 81,000 miles . So if it starts getting worse, stop driving it. Good luck.

Hey Y'all, The 2 valve 4.6 motors are notorious for this tick. I have an 01 Bullitt and an 01 crown vic police interceptor both with THE Tick. Mine is light at idle and gets louder under accellaration, how ever once it warms up it goes away. Ford fixed this problem by going to the 3v engine. It shouldnt be a problem as long as you keep the oil full and fresh!

the "tick" you are all talking about could be from an exhaust leak. on the stock system it could have a pin hole from rust. after market and stock can have pin holes from welds. its nothing to worry about but if it gets worse it could be a gasket. right now im in iraq and when i went home i noticed that my x-pipe that i installed was coming a little bit lose so with some brake off i took one bolt/nut off at a time and put lock tight on everything. problem solved.
