85 gt fuel guage problems

i have a 85 gt runs perfect,drives perfect but just lately the fuel guage has been actin strange, if you fill it up it wont go all the way to full and even when it has a quater tank its reads just above e. its never done this before and ive had the car for a few years.i believe when theres a bad ground it goes past full or dont work at all.correct me if im mistaken.its a mech. guage the haynes manual i have seis nothing of this.big thanks to anyone who might be able to help.have a nice day
