I have a 89 mustang lx 5.0 and i've started doing the common upgrades. I'm now interested in getting a more aggressive cam in my fox. I was wondering the prices on an install. I don't have a clue whats good and bad prices. I havn't had any estimates yet. Any help would be appreciated. Also what is a good cam, my car is pretty much stock. I have a mac cold air intake, 65mm throttle body and spacer, 73 mm maf sensor, 355 gears out back, 9mm wires, crane coil, bosch plus 4 plugs.and a upr billet short throw shifter, with pos. stops. this is pretty much all, so the car is stock, All my other upgrades are cosmetic. Now I'm looking for performance. My car is a 5 speed. One more question, should I go ahead and upgrade my cam chain. Thanks any advice would be helpful

first off installing a cam is going to move you horsepower and torque curve up in the rpm range. contact crane or some other manufacturer for specs to see what cams will provide you with the power you are looking for. a more agressive cam can cause some clearence issues. if you do decide to go with a cam swap it is alway a good idea to change the timing chaing and valve springs. if your going to do it you mind as well do it right the first time

I would suggest the Ford E303 for your combo. Great power, emission legal, powerband from 2000-6000 and matches great to a 5 speed/3:55 combo. No clearance issues, even with 1.7 rockers. Plus, it'll work with more mods you might want to do later on. Definately change the timing chain and if you want to do it right all the way, new lifters would be good. They're not necessary, but depending on the mileage they wouldn't hurt to have everything new. The cam should be around $150, springs about $100, timing chain about $50 and lifters about $120. And one last thing... go back to copper plugs. I had those Plus 4's and they're only good for throwing at things. Maybe they work for you but any serious mods like nitrous or boost will eat them up.

You don't HAVE to change them but with 75K miles it would be a good idea to have everything new. I am a certified mechanic and can tell you I'd charge about 6 hours at $55 an hour. That should be in the neighborhood anywhere you go.

To eagleautosports, is that six hours labor for the cam, chain, and lifters or just the cam and the chain? Also should I change my rockers or leave them alone. if so what should I go with, what are good brands. I guess I should have asked all questions first.

The lifters are going to have to come out to change a cam so that 6 hours would be for everything, start to finish. And by the way, you'll have to change the pushrods too anytime you change a cam. You could go with any roller from Comp Cams, Trick Flow, Harland Sharp, Steeda, and you can get either the bolt down or stud. You also have choices for the material. The Comp Magnum is the cheapest and is great but it's a stud mounted only style. The bolt down is aluminum and is great, especially the ones with an extra machined space for the springs. Stay with the 1.6 ratio unless you check the piston to valve clearance or the cam is made for use with 1.7 rockers.
