in some cases the brand does matter.  im sure you have heard the phrase "you get what you pay for".  i mean you wouldnt buy a chevy now would you.  so, i say when it comes to a mustang you should totally go for the best.  a good thing about a good brand short shifter such as BBK or Pro 5.0 is that your not only buying the brand name and the product, your buying a lot of extensive research as well.  many magazines take the best in brand names and test them head to head so that you can see exactly what kind of performance changes you should recieve in your car. you dont see crappy generic brands in our favorite mustang magazine now do you.  now if your gonna baby your car and shift like your 95 year old grandma would then i guess you could buy a generic, but only if your gonna be easy on it.  i wouldnt recommend taking a car with a wal-mart brand short shifter to the track.  NOW for the next question.  im no expert but i have read enough about cold air intakes to know enough about them.  Muscle mustangs and fast fords recently release an issue where they tested many different cold air intakes.  yes i know these intakes were for the new 2005 and up mustangs but the principles are still the same.  i have a 1988 coupe with a K&N filter under the hood and it works just fine.  i thought about putting a fenderwell cold air intake on it but i dont have any fenderwells so i decided not to.  if you dont have fenderwells on your car i wouldnt advise putting a fenderwell cold air intake on your car.  Personally i dont think there is enough of a difference between the two so u should just go with whatever you can afford or whatever you think looks the best.  i know this is long but hopefully i answered your questions and then some.
