Hello,

My name is Joseph Kent I’m from Huntsville Alabama. I own a 2000 model mustang GT with a 4.6 SOHC with no modifications at all  the engine has a “tick” (is the best way I can describe it ) at high RPM’s anything over 2500 it’s almost like a knock but not quite as loud. It doesn’t do it in idle only going down the road just before you change gear. Just cruising down the road in fourth or fifth gear you can’t hear it.  Due to only being able to hear it going down the road, I can’t pinpoint where this tick is coming from, it’s pretty loud you can even hear it inside the car. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be? Does the 4.6’s have any kind of issue with valve springs breaking? Or could it possibly be something on the front of the engine timing chain etc? The car has not lost any power or oil pressure. It also doesn’t do it when the engine is cold, only after it heats up.  It seems like when the engine reaches temp it starts to make this “tick”. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

                                                                                                                             Joseph Kent,

Sounds as if you have an exhaust leak at the headers check that first, my 5.0 did the same thing only when the motor was hot and only under load, it turned out my passenger side header had loosened up.  check this first before tearing into the engine
