Ok, here's my problem, I have a 90 mustang LX 5.0, I have recently swaped in a 306 and a rebuilt T-5. I am have problems with my clutch, first off after installation I noticed that when I reset the self-adjusting quadrant, I would press the petal all the way to the floor and still have no release but if I manually set the adjustment by prying the fork forward and setting the quadrant it would fully release, but petal effort is excessive, well that worked for about 30 mins of driving untill the the quadrant gave out ripping all the teeth off the quadrant, so I picked up a ford racing aluminum quadrant and now I have another problem, now the cable keeps stretching, it will drive fine for a while but then the clutch wont release again, so I keep tightning up the cable till I run out of adjustsment, or the cable breaks, so I pulled the trans back out and replaced the clutch again thinking that I may have gotten a bad pressure plate, I also checked the fork, bearing retainer and input splines but all are free of defects and operate smoothly, well it all went back in with a new clutch and pressure plate, and once again same problem, now I am getting frustated, the clutch is a cumberland heavy duty matched set. If any one has any idea on how to fix this problem it would be greatly appriciated. Thanks,
Joe

my recomendation is to slow down and take a deep breath. Go back over EVERYTHING and, if needed, use a buddy's car to compare to. I know it can be fustrating, but it's basically cause-and-effect. You just have to find the cause. Good luck!

I had that same problem with my four banger and ripped all the teeth off mine too, and thought I had a bad presure plate. The flywheel I put in was thicker than the one i need, so that solved my problems. But like the other guys said, take your time and make sure EVERTHING is right.

I have a 91 GT. (5-speed) and have the same exact problem. I put my car in the shop to install all of my clutch components new, hoping this would solve my problem.Shortly thereafter the same problem existed. So now very fustrated I decided to redue everything myself, checking the fork and changing all new parts. But I must admit I didn't surface the fly-wheel.So is sufacing I need or is it the wrong flywheel. When you find out please let me know.

I too had this problem with my 1986 GT. I went through 4 cables until I figured out the problem. First of all...do not get a stock cable, spend the money, and get a Ford Motorsports cable and quadrant if needed. Then...check to be SURE ur cable isnt rubbing the hole in the firewall, I lost 3 cables that way, they would rub through the firewall until they snapped. Also...check the bushings on ur clutch pedal on the rod where it pivots. Mine were worn and my pedal was actually pushing down on an angle, making more strain on me...and the cable. Last...check the way u routed the cable to the tranny. Route it EXACTLY as the factory one was making sure you go behind the motor mount, not in front of it. After I fixed these mistakes on my car, I have had no problems, and my clutch efforts have been cut in half. It works beautifully now.

well I replaced the cumberland clutch for a ford racing clutch and took the cumberland back to autozone and got my money back, the FRPP clutch works beautifly, smooth easy effort and correct travel and release. I learned a valuable lesson here "never buy parts from autozone" I should have known better after having gotten faulty starters and altanaters from there, but I figured something as simple as a clutch would be hard to screw up. boy was I wrong! after taking it back 3 times all having bad pressure plates. Its been a frustrating ordeal, but I finally came out on top, after 4 clutch kits, 2 quadrants, 4 cables, and having to repair the firewall from the last cable bushing ripping though the hole. I look back and wish i would have bought the FRPP clutch right off the bat, rather than save $30, instead it ended up costing me more by having to fix all the damage they did, but I guess you get what you pay for. well I hope this helps some one else and take my advice "don't buy parts from discount (low quality) auto part stores"
