hello im new to this board.. im in need of some help!!!!

i have a 93 mustang lx. its got a 331 stroker with a vortex sq charger installed. the proble i am having is  im getting a popping sound coming out of the tail pipes. now before i get slammed with replys let me tell you what i have checked...

i have changed the plugs to a colder plug as recommended by  my speed shop changed plug wires to a 10mm talyor  plugs are gapped at .030  fuel pressure is at 45psi static  i have had the car tuned but no chip was installed i was told i didnt need one yet.  the motro is fully rebuilt. all forged internals 40 over pistions elbrock heads 202 valves  i have a trick flow track intake 75 mm throtle body 76 mm mass a comps cam with a 256/265 duration 1.6 comp cam roller rockers  30lb injectors headers. from there ust the normal bolt ons. the problem is when i drive the car it runs strong and hard making 10lbs boost. but when i run at a steady load i can hear a pop coming out the pipes. i have checked all the rocker arms to make sure there tight and reajusted the valves. any help would be greatly apprecated.....as im at my ends i really dont want to put the car in the shop this is my daily driver.

Mr86GT has a Vortech and 12 pounds so he might could tell you something he knows but let me ask you this.  Is the sound coming from the pipes or is it coming from the engine through the pipes?  What kind of exhaust do you have?  With a Vortech and 10psi, you could really benefit from an X pipe if you don't already have one.  And an H pipe can make this kind of sound if it gets any back pressure in it.  If it's engine related, make sure your timing is correct which would probably be about 10 degrees initial and use a boost retard.  A good rule to go by is for every 2 pounds of boost, have 1 degree of retard just to be safe.  Check with your speed shop to make sure.

I'm surprised he hasn't popped in yet but just find his name anywhere in the posts and click on it and then send a mail to him.

ok i found a few things that i over looked.... i had a few wires that some how burned through right near the boots on the plugs... there wnet 80 bucks down the drain... also the kit i bought had a pvc vavle kit in it... but i was told i didnt need to use it. but from reading  on other site forums its a 50/50 thing.... and forget calling votex half of them have no clue what parts are in there kits..... but i changed the wires and i still have a slight pop coming out the pipes.. i have a h pipe .. with flowmaster. what the car feels like is a jerky feeling when im running at a steady load but when i get on it  its like a sling shot from hell.. make 12 pounds easy  then i let up on it and it goes back to jerking.... any one else know any ideas

thanks eagle for your help i will look for him ..

I had the same problem.  Mine isn't blown but a set of wires like you described would do it.  My problem was a fouled plug caused by a valve seal that migrated up the valve.  You don't use a lot of oil do you?  I know you have colder plugs so that's good but are they clean?  But this sounds like an ignition problem so check everything, even the ground wire to the engine.  Especially with a blower you definately need full power getting to the plugs.  And have you found Mr86GT yet?  I could give you his e mail address but I don't know if he'd want that.  I'll let him know to contact you on here.

Hi all....sorry I was gone...was moving. As for your problem Cobra...I had the same problem with my stang..I am running a VQ as well with 12 lbs. boost at max RPM. IF IF IF I am right....DO NOT DO NOT put the car under boost anymore until you get it fixed!!  This condition is VERY VERY dangerous...whats happening is...you are simply leaning out...my tuner told me this is called "lean popping". I had this happen to me alot...and on the dyno, she lean popped on me...and my tuner IMMEDIATELY shut the everything down and hit the Emergency Panic button on the dyno. Now...my car..we found my mass air meter was to blame, it was simply too small to handle the boost and my 42 lb. injectors anymore. What happens is the car will peg the mass air meter, and things just get out of hand. I would highly recommend taking it back to the speed shop, and getting them to duplicate your problem on the dyno, this way they can see WHERE in the fuel curve this is happening. They corrected mine by doing this, then custom tuning my chip around the curves at the RPM's it was happening at, re-adjusted my mass air flow, and incresed my fuel pressure just a tad. I know what you are talking about...this normally happens at slight to moderate throttle under load, usually going up a hill....the engine will almost like...miss...and the "pop" goes through the tailpipes.  My advice....keep the car in vacuum...NO BOOST...until you get this fixed. If you lean out under boost....you might be saying bye-bye to the motor. I hope this helps.

No...that shouldnt have anything to do with it. The only thing not installing the breather kit is that you will create excessive crankcase pressure, and you might either start blowing out intake gaskets, or oil will start coming out the valve covers and the oil cap, but thats all.

No see the lean-popping USUALLY will not occur when you are running it hard like that. It will occur when you are under slight, to moderate throttle under a load. You should try to simulate "normal" driving on the dyno...not just full balls-to-the-wall runs. It will usually happen right when the engine gets ready to go into boost, or just starts getting into boost. Get the car into a higher gear at a lower speed, sorta bog it down a little...then SLOWLY get into the throttle little by little...and it will probably do it again for you.  I have had ALOT of trouble with this...until I got it fixed anyway....and from what I understand what it really is....its really a serious issue you should try to get corrected.

ok i found out that the new wires i just installed 2 weeks ago burned through from the header heat.. this make the second set in less then 5 months... the shop check the temp coming out the headers at each port and there all with in the same range give or take a few degrees the other thing was my idel air motor was bad... friday the motor started reving crazy...  is there any thing i can use to keep the boots from getting tourched  i have thermo boot covers on them now but the number 3 cyclinder wire sets right on the header and the others are very close.. my headers are bbk 1 5/8 equall shorties ... i also have a dyno  set up for next week to have a chip burned and some more tunning  until then im off to buy a bike hell you cant beat 45 mpg with a bike and i drive 45 miles each way to work.. the gas in the stang is killing me spent $80 this week.

If the boot protectors aren't enough, then you might need to get a wire set that allows you to change the angle they're at and then get a set of header plugs.  They're shorter and that would get them away from that tube.  I had the same problem and got the MDS wires and boots and haven't had another wire burn out.

hey eagle.... the first set i burned through were the msd wires you can change the angles on with boots on them.. i called about hearder plug and they all tell me i have to just shout the dark on it... the speed shops in my area suck...im looking in to going long tubes to see what they will do they seem to have more clearance then the equal shortys ..

Shout the dark???  Call Jegs or Summit and ask for some Accel or NGK header plugs.  I know they have them.  And about those long tubes... I changed from the shorty/equal length to MAC longs and can tell you I hope yours is a stick and not an AOD.  But as far as plug clearance, they do give a little more room and shouldn't burn the boots anymore.
