I'm new and just signed up. I need help.
I have an 89 ford mustang lx hatchback 5.0 and my speedometer works but it doesn't work properly its about 15 miles off. I have a new speedometer cable and it didn't fix the problem. I've heard that you can have them recalibrated but I don't know who will do it. I also have upgraded to 93 pony 16's with 235's in the back. Do I need to change my speedo gears. Thanks for any help

Thats your whole problem. You changed tire sizes and not the speedo gear inside the tranny. Change that and your problem should be solved. Also, have the rear gears been changed?? If so, you'll need to change that speedo gear also. Mr86GT

My speedometer wasn't working properly before I changed the tires. I just recently upgraded to pony's. It was reading shower than I was going when I had the 15 inch bullit hole rims.

Then I would suggest you try to find out what rear gears are in the car. I would be willing to bet someone put 3.55's or 3.73's in it. If the previous owner does not know...a very CRUDE way of trying to find out...is...raise the rear tires off the ground...mark the driveshaft at an easy-to-see point as well as your tire....then place the car in Neutral...and count how many times the driveshaft turns with relation to one full spin of a rear tire...how ever many times the driveshaft turns is APPROX what ratio gears are in the rear....(example..3.5 turns would be 3.55's....3 3/4 turns 3.73's...and so on). " D " you could be suffering from several changes made to your Mustang. I went through the same problem when I bought my '92 LX.
Some guestions need to be answered. 1) Have the gage faces been changed? If so the speedometer may have to be calibrated. 2) Have the gears been changed? If yes then is it a stick or AOD? If you have a stick you can change the speedometer pinion gear in the transmission. Count the teeth on the gear and move up a tooth for every 7 mph. Ask your Ford dealer. If you have an automatic you will need to have a gear reduction device put in the speedometer cable. This can be done at a transmission or speedometer shop. Drive the mile post on the interstate and check you odometer or trip meter. You will probiliy find you are getting about 1 and 4/10's per mile. What ever the figure is take it with you to the Dealer or Tranny shop. One last word of advice. If you pull the speedometer and cable yourself you will save ***
Good luck, EB

Look in your local yellow pages for auto repair, speedometer repair. Some transmisssion shops do it also. Here is the shop I have used for years. Bill's Speedometer Service 636-561-7060 in O'Fallon, MO.
Try a MSN WEB search using key word "speedometer". Bill's e-mail; trapplean@aol.com
Hope I helped. EB
