first.. backfire and shut off...  does it run OK if you don't get on it hard..?????????

i would start by changing the fuel filter...

because fuel injection fuel injection systems are looped back to the tank.. the filter has to clean the fuel many many times..   when they clog.. there will not be enough volume of fuel getting thru to keep the flow from the injectors at a steady rate as the computer calls for more open time on the injectors..

the answer to your second question is ....  more than 15 pounds at idle is a good thing.. pressure should increase with engine speed..   there are oil pressure test gauge sets available at some stores.. a bunch of adaptors, a flexible hose and a gauge.  in your printed issue .. check the harbor freight ad.. they have them..

next... if changing the fuel filter does not fix it..    there are several other issues...

disconnect the wire from the coil to the center of the distributer cap so the engine cannot run.
take a test light and stick it into the positive side of the coil connector...  ground the clip...  sit in the drivers seat or where you can watch the test light.. slowly turn the key from off to run then up to where the engine cranks.. then back to run..  then to off..  the test light should not go dark once you reach the run position..    some ignition switches have burned away contacts and cause loss of power problems to not just the ignition but to the fuel injection system..  this usually crops up when there is a big ring of keys hanging from the ignition lock cylinder..  when they swing.. sometimes it will move it into a dead zone of the burned contacts..

if that does not fix it...  invest the 30 bucks in a code scanner for the EECIV system  actron makes a small one that works...  run the KOEO and KOER self tests to verify the system is working...

actually this last thing should actually be first...

clean the ground connections on both ends of the radiator core support... if the wires are fatigued and torn.. repair them with new ends..  some stereo installers keep 8 gauge crimp terminals and ring terminals.. so they can extend the broken wires a few inches..  there are also ground connections for the system on the inner fenders between the back of the core support and the shock tower..    just looking is not enough.. take them off and wire brush both sides of the ring terminals and the underside of the bolt head... a little on the mounting surface..

WHY.. electrons flow from negative to positive.. if you have a bad ground.. you MAY not have enough electrons to operate the circuits... you would not believe how many cars i have fixed just by cleaning the ground cable connections..

radiator core support is the piece that the radiator mounts to... goes from fender to fender.. has the hood latch mounted on a bracket on the front..  it also has the little feet that support the front of the hood when its closed...

wait.. i have a picture...

i put green squares where the grounds are...  some of them.. you will have to look for wires that are attached to the body.. take them off and clean them with a small wire brush.

this is an important test..

print this image... follow the test...

the lower half..   1. 2. .3  4.  is very important.. and will help you find any hidden issues..

please post the results of the voltage drop test..
